MOHRS is a 501c3 all volunteer organization.  That means everything we do is accomplished through volunteer help.  No one is paid.  Even the chapter manager is a volunteer and that means everyone’s time is donated no matter how many hours they work at a regular job or how much they have to do for their own family life.

The bunnies we rescue and subsequently care for depend upon all of our volunteers for their daily care, cleaning, medical well-being, brushing, socialization, community outreach to teach people about their appropriate care, adoption events to help find them forever homes, and fundraising events to provide the monetary means to continue their care and handling their medical needs.  In short, THE BUNNIES NEED YOU!

There are many, many different activities that are available.  Some require little effort, some require a lot of dedication, but they all need someone in order to make everything work.

We are well aware of how demanding life is and the cost of gas, yet there are volunteers who regularly drive from north St. Louis County, St. Charles, O’Fallon, MO, O’Fallon, IL, New Baden, IL, and Edwardsville.  There are others who come when possible from Wentzville, Staunton, IL, Springfield, IL, Iowa and, of course closer areas.  We have had students working part-time and going for their Masters and PhDs who come to clean litter boxes as stress relievers and just to know they’re doing some good.  We’ve had busy families set aside some time to help their children know the value of community service and retirees who want to know they can still make a difference.  We’ve had those who offer their professional expertise and service.  We’ve had high schoolers perform community service hours. Every single person and every single hour has made a difference.   Even two hours on a Saturday cleaning cages or two hours at a Petsmart simply talking to people or two hours helping at one of our events makes a major difference.

When we first started, there were shelters that thought we couldn’t possibly be for real.  Rescue rabbits?  Now there are over 30 shelters that call us for help and there have been 6 major rescues and confiscations in the last 5 years which helped over 400 rabbits.  Some of you were there doing triage and others opened their homes to fosters. In total, there have been nearly 2,000 bunnies our volunteers have helped.  There are NO shelters on the East Side that accept rabbits.  Most on the west side of the Mississippi River won’t take them or admit to having no ability to care for them.  That’s why they call us.

PLEASE consider donating some of your time to help and/or offer your expertise to continue helping these animals which are the 3rd most abandoned pet in the country.  They need you to prevent being tossed into the street or woods, to keep from being euthanized because there’s nowhere to go for them, to find a gentle hand to help them learn to trust and love again, and to help them find wonderful new homes.
