Sanctuary Rabbits  How YOU can sponsor a Sanctuary Rabbit!

Sanctuary rabbits are those buns who will, because of medical or other conditions, spend the remainder of their lives in a foster home where they are are able to maintain a comfortable and "quality of life" happiness with appropriate care.

We foster three different types of rabbits:
* Adoptable rabbits who are ready (or nearly ready) for their own wonderful, permanent home.
* Special Needs rabbits who have medical or other conditions requiring an adoptive parent who is experienced in rabbit care.
* Sanctuary rabbits are those buns who will, because of medical or other conditions, spend the remainder of their lives in a foster home where they are are able to maintain a comfortable and "quality of life" happiness with appropriate care.

When you sponsor any rabbit, your money goes for his/her upkeep each month at their foster home. If you have seen "costs of adopting and maintaining a rabbit," then you understand how costs can multiply at a foster home with multiple rabbits, maintaining the buns at their own expense.  In the case of Sanctuary Rabbits, the medical bills can pile up, not even counting costs of special foods, meds, special bedding etc.

To sponsor a rabbit in sanctuary or foster care, please send the name of the rabbit and a check for $25 for one month (made out to Missouri HRS) to "Bunny Sponsorship, P.O. Box 6362, Chesterfield, Missouri 63006".   Please note which bunny you are wanting to sponsor. Any questions?  Call 314-995-1457 or email mo_hrs@hotmail.com for information on how YOU can be an angel to one of these deserving Sanctuary Rabbits.  Your name will be seen on the Bunny's page on Petfinder as "this rabbit sponsored in the month of month by your name here." You can also sponsor a bun in memory of others.

You can now sponsor bunnies using Paypal!

T-Rex and Dragonfly were less than 6 months-old when their caregivers, who adopted them, had to flee the wrath of Katrina.   Their caregivers home was destroyed in the wake of the hurricane, and this darling bonded pair, with no home to go back to, were left at the shelter.  The chaotic escape from the storm, and ride from New Orleans to St. Louis took its toll on these two very young, shy bunnies.    This difficult beginning of their life together caused them to withdraw and become unadoptable resulting in their status of staying in the care of MOHRS as sanctuary bunnies.

Herman Hopper, a little white and grey, dwarf Himalayan bun, with pretty red eyes, originally came from a rescue situation in Belleville.  He was so shy and scared that he was overlooked for adoption, time and time again over the years until now has become a Sanctuary Bunny. Any help for Herman's ongoing care is appreciated.
Buddy and Sisi became sanctuaries due to aggressive behavior. Buddy had a habit of charging and grunting as if he was going to take your arm off.  Sisi had bitten many times.  Their foster mom found that as long as she jumped and squealed when Buddy charged he kept doing it, but when she held her ground he just stopped short and looked disappointed—he was all bluff.
A hand coming from behind Sisi caused her to whirl
and bite, but when approached from the front she was fine--perhaps before she came to us someone would sneak up from behind to catch her. Now that their foster mom knows the proper way to handle them, you would never know they had ever been aggressive, in fact they love to be petted and get kisses and are enjoying life with people who understand them.
Honeybear came in with a confiscation from which several bunnies did not survive.  Shy Blueberry was left with her mom at a shelter. (Mom got adopted.)  Honeybear and Blueberry bonded themselves after being
side by side for treatment of upper respiratory infections. For three years the antibiotics tried failed to work so the two were allowed to bond and comfort each other.  A new
antibiotic being used for rabbits worked well for them so 6 year old Honeybear and 5 yr. old Blueberry are happy now and accustomed to where they are.  Honeybear also requires extra grooming to handle his English Angora coat.
Snowman, a Florida White, has unusual aggressive tendencies and dislikes almost everyone.  Even his official foster mom has some difficulties, but her daughter agreed to house him in her room and Snowman has definitely adopted her going so far as collecting all of her house slippers and piling them around himself for comfort when she’s not home.  He will willingly sit on her lap or under her chair while she does homework, and ferociously guards her room.  Felicity, an excessively shy girl who ran from everyone, but showed some interest in Snowman, is now housed near him in hopes that the two will bond and give each other a friend.
Mimi : Cute little Mimi is at least 8 years old (in 2008), and has recently been reclassified from special needs to sanctuary.  She's always been possessive of her dishes, has had several molars removed, and lately she's begun having trouble with her back legs.  It's no wonder that she's gotten even grumpier in recent days, but she's receiving lots of supportive care in her foster home, and still enjoys zipping around her exercise pen and trying to do binkies.
